From the start of my career in education, my intention was social justice.
As a white woman teaching in majority black and brown neighborhoods, I was immediately faced with the impact of my “white saviorism.” I learned early on that acting with humility and leading through relationships were important ways to connect across difference. In my 15 years of working in schools, as a teacher, instructional coach and manager, I came to understand that rather than focusing my energy on “saving” the children and families, my energy was better spent dismantling the oppressive systems, structures and ways of being that my colleagues and I were upholding.
We are all swimming in the waters of white dominant cultural values, and we must disrupt the way they function in our lives.
As an Associate Leadership Coach with Leverage to Lead, I facilitate adult learning experiences that center our humanity, prioritize process as well as outcome, and build from the foundation of connection. I support clients one-on-one to make the invisible visible; to disrupt the implicit biases we all hold and act upon unwillingly. In my work with Leverage to Lead, I have supported clients across multiple industries including education, the arts, and law.
I believe that through shifting systems, we shift behaviors; when we change believers into builders, we create more equitable and inclusive environments for all.
